One significant issue with FTP is that usernames and passwords are communicated between the client and host in clear text. This is a huge security concern. For this reason, secure methods of copying files such as SFTP have replaced the commonly used FTP protocol.
So, why do firms still insist on setting up and making data available via FTP? Well, as best I can figure out, these firms have been around for a while (like before Windows 3.1) and they have antiquated systems and staff that they can't or will not update. More often than not, it's ignorance! STOP IT. Stop using FTP.
