Yesterday I had the privilege of looking through a pile of archived newspaper ads, ad creative, memos, and certificates that a client had brought over for research. All were from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and they were an incredible look into the ad world of those times. I used them for research but not only that, for inspiration. A very modern company, with an incredibly rich history that was carefully documented and archived, not only saved the newspaper clippings of published ads but saved their sketchings, ideas and storyboards as well, giving a glimpse into the process.
One such ad featured a guy I described around the office as a “dreamboat” who looks like an excited Don Draper of Mad Men. He epitomized the idealized elegance of the ad men of the early 1960’s, and in this ad, he had something important to sell me!
I am going to draw from this and build on it. Who knows, maybe 60 years down the road, my sketchings and ideas will be found in the archive by another designer.
